Many churches are using the opportunity of this season of fall and the widely accepted event of Halloween to have an event to minister to their community. As a follower of Christ it also presents an opportunity for you to invest in your neighborhood. As a Christian Halloween is a way for you to invest in your neighborhood and here are 6 ideas: Click To Tweet
Here are some personal ways you can make the most of Halloween:
- Have a community event for the children on your street.
Invite your neighborhood over complete with costumes, games, and simple treats. Make your home a fun place for children and there will be many years of opportunity for you to share your faith.
- Include adult food for the adults taking children out to trick or treat.
Hot apple cider and cookies for grownups is a nice surprise on a cold night. Friendly conversation on a fun filled night is a great way to get to know families in your area and can be a starting point for ministry.
- Be generous with what you give the trick or treaters and throw in an invite to a kids activity at your church.
Halloween night is not the night to hold back your generosity. Invest a little more in your candy treats and throw in something extra like a children’s book and a special invite to your church.
- Have a bonfire or fire pit event for the kids in your community.
Children love to roast marshmallows on an open fire (with adult supervision, of course). If you want to get really creative, throw in hotdogs and make s’mores too! Some of their parents will want to join in too.
- Just be friendly and ask questions.
My husband is great with kids. I have watched him over the years. He takes the time to talk to them, asks them questions about themselves and encourages them in school, sports, or other activities. I am always surprised at how asking some simple questions with a focus of care and concern for others opens doors for ministry.
- Serve others with your children or grandchildren.
Take your children or grandchildren on a special fall ministry project. Visit the elderly at their homes and rake leaves or take them some special cookies. Or let the children dress up and take a special treat to your local assisted living or nursing home. Or maybe there are children in your area that aren’t able to get out to celebrate due to special health issues. Taking a party to them would be a wonderful blessing. Serving with your children or grandchildren is a great way to share the love of Christ with them and with others.
There are lots of opinions in the faith community about Halloween (and I am not going to speak to that!). But whatever your view, you can have fun during this season. Candy, costumes, and fall decorations create a warm and fun environment. Because of our faith, we can serve others with great joy.
