In the middle of the joy of the season, remember it can be one of the most painful times for people who have lost a loved one. Be sensitive to that in your organization and especially for those you lead right now… There are people who’ve had great loss this year. What a gift for you to remember that and be sensitive to how the holidays could be painful for them. For some it’s the loss of a marriage, some it’s the loss of a child, some it’s the loss of their health — something has changed that makes this Christmas a little harder. What a gift to be sensitive to these people this Christmas.
Say no. Mark off the dates that you’re going to just be home as a family. Mark off the time that you’re going to have just for yourself. Pick the things you’re going to do — I do think you need to pick. Be outwardly focused. Pray about what ministry looks like to your family and do something to give to others. In the church, be a part of the church experience in giving. And in your organization, think about what that means for you to give. But mostly, say no. There are so many good things that happen in the holidays… but you can’t do it all.
