I am so thankful for 2014 and the many books ahead to read. My nightstand is full of new books from B&H and others. I love the feel of a physical book and the personal way books can be like a friend, an encourager, and a companion on a journey, or a resource to equip you to be a better person, parent, spouse, teacher, or leader. I make it a habit to read a variety of books but The Bible is my best companion and I start each day (4:30 a.m.!) reading God’s word.
Whenever I travel, I enjoy looking around at what other people are reading especially in airports. It used to be so easy to see what everyone was reading from the covers but with the rise of eReaders, you have to ask someone to share what they are reading. In the publishing industry, we have seen exponential growth in eBooks in the past few years. There seemed to be the fear that there would never be a need for brick and mortar bookstores again! But we have seen an interesting trend in the past year. EBooks have continued to sell well but there seems to be a stabilization occurring. People still love the printed book as well as eBooks. There is value in both formats. People have more opportunity to be enriched through books than ever before. What an exciting time.
I am a member at LifePoint Church in Smyrna, Tennessee. LifePoint has planted campuses all across the world, from Brussels to Bangkok. It gives me such joy and appreciation knowing that despite the difficulties to get physical books to these campuses, in an instant the potential for each ministry leader and person in the church to access biblical content is possible.
When Jesus was encouraging his disciples he knew that they would need to be equipped with the Holy Spirit and the word of God to take his name to the nations.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 (HCSB)
What a joy it is to know that from the Gutenberg Press to the rise of eBooks we have the ability to learn and share biblical content in so many ways. I am thankful for the gift of books and being part of such an exciting time in publishing. The gospel can be shared in so many ways, whether through an eBook or physical book.
My nightstand is packed so I may use my eReader a little more in 2014.
Do you like reading a physical book or an eBook better? Which books are you most excited to read this year?
I am currently reading Chasing God by Angie Smith and love it.
